Imprisoned martyrs on the move: reading holiness in Byzantine martyrdom accounts

Abstract This paper shows that the protagonists of Byzantine Passions are often depicted as attaining holiness while on move: after their arrest by pagan soldiers, Christian martyrs subjected to travels for legal reasons. Drawing anthropological concept liminality (Arnold van Gennep, Victor Turner), I will suggest such inflicted or transfers in serve liminal phases between interrogation, torture, imprisonment, and execution, which ascend state holiness. The paper, structured three major sections, focuses scenes ‘imprisoned move’ delineated both pre-Metaphrastic Metaphrastic martyrdom accounts (fourth-tenth centuries). After a concise introduction theoretical background text corpus this study, main sections explicate motif imposed movement conjunction with literary construction holiness, spiritual formation audience, structure narrative.
